Soul Surfer

I have seen a lot of movies in my life. I know the formula for a good story, and I am always looking for the next big thing. At an early screening of Soul Surfer I know what the next big thing is. This movie is amazing. I have seen strong movies, and tough movies. Rarely have I seen powerful movies. Soul Surfer is powerful. It has a message of faith, but it is not overpowering, nor is it in your face. Bethany Hamilton has an amazing story. One that millions will get to know about starting April 8, 2011.

Before seeing Soul Surfer I did some research. I knew it was about a teenage girl who was a talented surfer. I knew she got attacked by a shark, and lost her arm. I knew she got back into the water, and had success. Having that knowledge made me expect certain things. Soul Surfer provided them in spades. The emotional strength in this film is astounding. Her upbeat, and positive attitude is amazing. I have not been through that, and I hope I do not have to experience it. I am not sure I could be as positive as Bethany.

I might as well get to the elephant in the room because everyone wants to know how Soul Surfer handles the shark. The scene is fast, intense, and we are along the ride for the aftermath. The first few times we see the stub of her arm can be uncomfortable. I felt a little squeamish, and I have seen some intense things in my life. That was one short part, and reflects more about how we react to someone who is different than it reflects on the film. Those short scenes also make her return to surfing so much better.

Something that impressed me about Soul Surfer is the all star Hollywood cast. From Dennis Quaid to Helen Hunt to Kevin Sorbo there are some big names in Soul Surfer. Craig T. Nelson was one of the biggest surprises. All of them perform at the top of their games. AnnaSophia Robb gives an amazing performance throughout this film. She is the perfect actress for this role, and she does an amazing job. I have to drop one more name before I finish this paragraph - Carrie Underwood. She has a small role, but such an integral part to the plot. She does a great job, and adds to this film as well.

There is a faith element to Soul Surfer. However I do not believe Soul Surfer is just for Christians. There are quotes in Soul Surfer that only a Christian would get. They are however great quotes that can be used in life. As a movie Soul Surfer is a powerful story of getting back up on the horse after being knocked off. Her best friend was having nightmares about sharks, but Bethany wanted to get back into the water as soon as possible. That kind of drive reaches all demographics.

The camera work, and scenery in Soul Surfer are beautiful. I have never been surfing in my life, but Soul Surfer makes me want to get out there and try it. If you see one film in April, I am encouraging you to go and see Soul Surfer. You will not regret it one bit. I am really glad I attended the screener. I will be seeing Soul Surfer again in the future. Maybe I will see you there.

God bless you and yours,
