To Catch A Dollar Available on DVD January 29th
November 28, in the year of our Lord 2012
– Professor Muhammad Yunus never wanted to be a banker and
certainly never imagined winning the Nobel Peace Prize. Yet his
quest to help the working poor invest in themselves led to both.
Known as the creator of the revolutionary microfinance
institution, Grameen Bank, Yunus brings his trailblazing program
to the United States in the powerful documentary TO CATCH A
DOLLAR: Muhammad Yunus Banks on America. On January 29th, this
Sundance Film Festival selection by Gayle Ferraro will be
released on DVD for the first time by Shout! Factory. Also
included in the release is the bonus feature Sixteen Decisions,
Ferraro’s documentary about how committing to a charter in
exchange for a microloan made a difference in a young woman’s
life.
The Grameen Bank was built on the radical notion that if you
loan money within the context of peer support, not only will
borrowers repay and sustain the bank,
they will elevate their communities in the process. In TO CATCH
A DOLLAR, Professor Yunus brings his unique method of
microfinance, which has helped millions of rural entrepreneurs
in developing countries, to the bastion of first-world
capitalism: the United States of America. First stop: Queens,
New York. With an intimate camera capturing both buoyant and
despairing moments, TO CATCH A DOLLAR chronicles the birth of
the nonprofit organization Grameen America, and the evolution of
the first small branch. Will the solidarity principles translate
to a diverse group of inner-city women? As the banking industry
collapses, will these intrepid social-justice financiers
succeed? Witness the compelling stories of the first women
borrowers; from the challenges they face to the successes they
achieve as they learn to sustainably rise from poverty by
starting and growing their own businesses with the education,
peer-support, and non-collateral microloans they receive from
this innovative new system of banking.
