What Many RPGs are Missing
Cordova, TN; December 17, in the year of our Lord 2014--Family
Friendly Gaming, the industry leader in covering the family
friendly video games is looking at a thought from the RPG
Master. He feels something is missing in many modern day role
playing games (RPGs). Know what it is? What do you think is
missing from many modern day role playing games? Aside from a
Christian storyline, and family friendly characters. Those two
things are worth referencing. This one may have you scratching
your head. Unless you played old school role playing games.
“...”
Three dots in a row used to be the standard answer from the main
character. Other characters would say outrageous or incendiary
things. The main character would stay as cool as a cucumber and
respond with: “...” I never thought about it at the time. I
should have pondered what “...” really meant. It was the game
developers way of having us the player connect with the game.
The “...” response allowed us to respond in our own nature. We
could respond to the game with what we were thinking. Now some
may find it odd to see someone talking to a video game machine.
That doesn’t matter. What matters is we were included in the
story.
What do we get now? Way too many times we have stereotypes from
main characters in role playing games. There are plenty of tough
guys and tough girls with bad attitudes. They have some rude,
ugly, hateful, and snarky comment to make. But in the end they
decide to go save the day from whomever is trying to destroy
their fantasy world. I can not connect with those kinds of
characters. Plus I never connect with the game at all. Why not?
Because my responses are never included. These modern day games
are not allowing gamers to connect. They have stolen the “...”
from us. I want “...” to be put back into role playing games. I
want to be a part of the story again.
God bless,
RPG Master
