Interior design inspired by your favorite video games
January 20, in the year of our Lord 2015 --
Just as it’s fun to create a nursery for a new arrival in your
home, or to update junior’s bedroom décor from time to time, so
design schemes based on gaming are becoming increasingly
fashionable. There are some really creative ideas emerging for
bedrooms, dens and living areas that will really brighten up
your life. Here are some of the fun concepts based on retro
gaming that just might inspire you to rethink your interiors.
Start simple
Really simple changes can be made to your home by updating rugs
and lampshades – for example, themed shades available include
brightly-colored designs from Space Invaders and Super Mario
Bros, and there are also cute little mushroom-shaped ottomans
and even USB-powered mushroom desk lamps. Ottomans are also
available in a variety of configurations based on Pac-Man
images.
Then there is the easy to install and very effective shelving
that recreates a screenshot from the popular classic Donkey Kong
– the perfect way to store your favorite video games. Even your
kitchen can get a makeover if you add some retro arcade-style
magnets to the kitchen door and a few wall posters of gaming
images.
Similar to the shelving, Tetris shapes are reproduced in a
stunning wall unit that you can assemble in whatever way takes
your fancy – that’s almost like playing the game as you
construct the storage. If this happens to be your retro video
game of choice, Tetris fridge magnets are also available, and
you can build your own LED desk lamp using, yes, you guessed it,
Tetris-based shapes.
Furniture
Could you live with a giant replica of a Nintendo console as a
coffee table or a couch dressed up in Sega Master System
trappings? Perhaps you’d prefer to sip your coffee around a
larger than life PS3 or NES controller console and relax on your
Space Invaders couch?
Whatever you choose, when it comes to complementing
gaming-themed furniture, such as sofas and coffee tables, the
trick is to mimic the hard edges and linear appearances of many
sci-fi games. Forget the soft curves and delete the window
drapes – instead, emphasize hard, geometric shapes for tables
and chairs and turn the simplicity of the strong lines of
window shutters to their best advantage.
Wall art
The enthusiasm for gaming merchandise – from figurines to
clothing accessories – has now moved on to sophisticated room
décor that recreates gaming images, including an 8-bit faux
fireplace. Princess Zelda fans may favor some custom artwork,
available in a variety of colors – you can choose the original
red shade, an attractive blue version, as well as pink lemonade.
Finally, in another artwork development, the trend for
traditional Japanese woodblock has taken a new turn as artists
are creating innovative work based on characters from Nintendo
and other games. They can then produce fabulous prints on
Japanese paper; these will make an attractive addition to your
home. This may be just the crowning glory you need to complete
your statement gaming-based home décor.
