You Are No Athlete
Cordova, TN; August 13, in the year of our Lord 2018--Family
Friendly Gaming, the industry leader in covering the family
friendly video games is taking a strong stance on “professional
gamers” in “e-sports” calling themselves athletes. The facts are
pure and simple. The truth is right in front of our faces.
Gamers playing in these tournaments are not athletes. This is
not a sport. I know that will be controversial to some people.
Especially those making money off of playing games. The
comparison between video games and sports is something that
advocates of “e-sports” will try to say is baseball is just a
game. Basketball is just a game. Football is just a game.
The difference advocates of “e-sports” is ignoring is in real
sports there is physical activity. Real and true athletes train
their bodies to play the sport. Sitting in a chair and playing a
video game is not really very physical. I was at the gym
recently weight training and a swimmer came in there to train
certain parts of his body. He weight trained as something he
needed to do to become a better swimmer. How do those people
playing video games train their bodies to be better at a video
game? What kind of physical drills and exercises do they go
through? Just sitting there in a chair? Wrist movements with a
mouse and keyboard? Talking into a microphone with just your
teammates?
Every single sport I can think of that has athletes has physical
training involved. Athletes that play tennis go to the gym and
work out. Football, baseball, basketball, soccer, and hockey
players all spend time exercising their bodies because that is
part of the prerequisite of an athlete. They also practice the
sport. I do not deny people playing “e-sports” video games
practice that game. They run drills with a team. They hone their
gaming skills. There is also PC’s, mice, keyboards, and
headsets. BTW that reminds me. What other sport allows an entire
team to only talk to their teammates while in the middle of the
game? If you say something on the basketball court anyone can
hear you. Even the other team. In “e-sports” what you say can be
limited to just your team.
I know this opinion might offend some people. Especially those
who financially benefit from “e-sports.” I am not disrespecting
you, or the companies that make these games. I am clarifying
what an athlete actually is. I do not see you as an athlete. I
do not see video games as a sport. If you disagree then send me
an email and convince me.
I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day.
God bless,
Paul Bury
