Dark Side of Gaming - Herd Mentality
Cordova, TN; April 20, in the year of our Lord 2020 -- Family Friendly Gaming, the industry leader in covering the family friendly video games is continuing our requested series on the DARK SIDE OF GAMING. This article is on the herd mentality that infects our industry way too often. When one company finds something that works all these other companies try to make the same thing with their own little spin on it. There have been all kinds of herd mentality from too many video game companies way too often in the past. Remember the mascot era? How about the 2D fighters era? Or putting 2D games into 3D? My favorite was the indie games push. All of these companies brought in indie video game developers to show they were hip with the indie community. Was it still indie then?
I have noticed herd mentality other places as well. Twitch is a great example of this. There are all these people jumping on the band wagon of streamers who have the most viewers. It is fascinating to hear they do not enjoy these streamers, or learn anything from them. So why are they watching? My research shows they want to be where the most are. In other words they want to be part of the herd. Even if they don’t like that particular herd. I would think they might want to seek out streamers they actually enjoy watching. But what do I know?
I have always been an individual who thinks for himself. I have told a variety of people at a plethora of companies when they are participating in the herd mentality. I understand they want to copy the success they have seen in others. They don’t seem to realize people made that game popular because it was different from the last herd. Sure there are new ideas that do not become a hit. There is always a gamble there. How many clones have actually surpassed the originals? I also understand wanting to be around all of the cool kids. Have you watched the chat in extremely popular streamers? You might get seen for one second. You won’t get their attention. You won’t be recognized. Yet if you go to streamers with less people you can get a real interactive experience.
I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day.
God bless,
