Where’s The Coverage?
Cordova, TN; December 6, in the year of our Lord 2021 -- Family Friendly Gaming, the industry leader in covering the family friendly video games is continuing to be the voice of diversity in the gaming media, and media at large. The entitlement mentality of so many in PR and Marketing makes me laugh. Ya’ll have probably seen the massive amounts of coverage Family Friendly Gaming has done without being paid for the work. In fact the super majority of the work we do that makes these companies money loses us money. I find it hilarious they are demanding the rich pay their fair share and they themselves do not provide any kind of financial compensation for all of the hard work we do that makes them money. How did they get those billions in the bank? It is from treating us like slave labor. You might think I am chasing a rabbit here. I actually am not because it is completely connected.
I get emails from people in PR and Marketing wanting to know where we published their press releases. Notice how they assume we published it. Imagine going to a restaurant and demanding your food after making it clear you have no intention of paying for it. Let that sink in for a minute. The people in PR and Marketing are trying to make their clients money. Do you know what they get for making their clients money? They get financial bonuses. So the more coverage they get the more sales they expect, and the more they personally financially profit. What do we get out of it? We get the expectation that we will give them more free work in the future, and they will make even more money off of our hard work. They never financially compensate us. Plenty of gaming media outlets have gone out of business due to this model.
The job of anyone in PR and Marketing is to convince us to publish content related to the products their clients are selling. When they come to me expecting I will publish their press release, it does not convince me to do the work. Advertisers and sponsorships get my attention. I have played plenty of games for sponsorships. Games I would have never normally played. That also makes the moochers look even worse. I have told plenty of them that it has gotten competitive and all of those paying us to play their games have squeezed them out. The opportunities for pro bono work have dwindled. Especially when we have already published coverage of the product they represent and it did not do well.
I can see some people freaking out and immediately jumping to the conclusion that I am now part of the bought off gaming media. No I am not. I do not give higher review scores because they are an advertiser or pay us sponsorships to do live streams/videos of their games. I do not include them in our Christmas Buying Guide because they paid us money (unless they are paying for an advertisement and that is what is in there). It does not buy anything beyond what they are paying for. Most of the time I suggest advertisements only after we have reviewed their product. Hey we liked this product and think it would be a good choice for an advertisement with us.
I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day.
God bless,
Paul Bury
