Where is the Creativity?

Family Friendly Gaming News

Cordova, TN; September 9, in the year of our Lord 2024 -- Family Friendly Gaming, the industry leader in covering the family friendly video games is continuing to be the voice of diversity in the gaming media, and media at large. Since 1998 I have covered video games from some media viewpoint. It all started with Wyldcard's WAY and grew into Family Friendly Gaming. I have seen all kinds of trends in the video game industry. Do not forget that I started playing video games as a kid. PONG was the first system I ever used as a kid. I have more hours in video games than most tenured professors have in whatever is they are teaching at major universities. If we went just on hours played I have over twelve PhD's. How many specialists do you know that can say that?

I marvel at the ingenuity and creativity of a lot of the video games that are created. I do not marvel at some of the names that are chosen. I recently worked on publishing some images of a Nintendo Switch video game called - Cooking. Can you guess what you do in this downloadable only video game that is missing the all important physical copy format? If you guessed that you cook in that video game then you would be on the target. Whooohoooo! Points for you. How much effort did it take to come up with a name for a cooking video game? There have been plenty of other cooking video games out there. No other ideas came to mind? Best Cooking, or You Cook, or Cooking King, Emperor of Cooking, or some other idea. By the way I came up with those on the fly while writing this article.

That one little example is not the only one. My biggest gripe is video games that put - 'The Official Videogame,' in the title of their game. How many unofficial versions of that bike racing game are there? I did some research and could find none. Why do you need that in the name? No one can figure out it is a video game when it is on the PS5, or Xbox Series X. How many other products are getting physical copies on those systems? I do not see any movies, or television shows coming out in physical copy on those systems. What else would be on the PS5 or Xbox Series X? We do not need that kind of a phrase as part of the name of a video game.

My final gripe on lack of creativity in video game names are the ones that have to be an entire sentence. We do not need to know every single aspect of the game in the name. Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars is a great example. I now know every single thing I need to about this video game. I have no interest in playing it because there is no mystery left to it. Why does the name need to be that long? The Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars video game is pretty much a wannabe Rocket League. Notice how Rocket League is more pithy? Notice how Rocket League is easier to say and discuss? Which one do you think is more popular? That would be Rocket League. Excessive length to video game names just annoy gamers, and make you look like you are lacking any creativity.

I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day.

God bless,
