Finland – April 4, in the year of our Lord 2025 – Prepare to dive into the darkness of an eternal night. Kaamos, a bite-sized turn-based puzzle roguelike developed by Pepperbox Studios and partnered with indie publishing platform indie.io, will officially launch on April 28, 2025. Set in a dark medieval world where the Sun has mysteriously vanished, Kaamos challenges players to strategically navigate a perilous landscape while battling enemies through unique tile-based mechanics.

In Kaamos, players engage in duels to the death against hostile foes, utilizing a distinctive combat system that relies on matching tiles on a grid. Rows and columns on the grid loop back on themselves, giving players the ability to drag tiles across the board, setting up tactical counters and attacks. Every move counts—players can see enemy actions in advance and must carefully plan their tile matches to avoid being overwhelmed by deadly attacks.

The game’s turn-based nature allows players to pause and think, but the action remains fast-paced, with tension building as players seek to outsmart their opponents. This unique twist on the roguelike genre combines strategic thinking with puzzle-solving, ensuring that no two encounters are the same.

Craft Your Own Tactics

A standout feature of Kaamos is its deep character and deck-building system. Players loot powerful weapons, armor, and rings from defeated enemies, each item offering unique stats and abilities that can change the tide of battle. Over 180 items are available to collect, giving players the freedom to experiment with different playstyles. Want to become a dual-wielding berserker with high mobility? Or perhaps a heavily armored knight with a shield to block incoming attacks? Every choice matters, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to combat.

The flexibility of the equipment system allows for diverse tactics, ensuring that no two playthroughs are alike. With a variety of builds to experiment with, players can tailor their approach to each challenge they face in the ever-changing world of Kaamos.

A Dark Medieval World to Explore

Kaamos isn’t just about combat; it’s also about exploration and mystery. The game’s randomly generated world offers a vast, dark medieval setting where each journey is unique. Players will navigate through eerie, crumbling landscapes, from desolate villages to forgotten ruins, all while uncovering the secrets behind the Sun’s disappearance.

The atmosphere is thick with tension as players encounter strange beings and mysterious forces lurking in the shadows. The eerie, gothic tone of the game’s setting perfectly complements the high-stakes nature of its combat, creating a deep sense of immersion. Will you find the truth behind the endless night, or will you be lost to the abyss?

Strategic Roguelike Elements

Kaamos features procedurally generated levels and permadeath, meaning that each time you play, the world, enemies, and loot will change, keeping the experience fresh and challenging. You’ll need to think fast, adapt to new threats, and carefully plan your moves to survive.

The game’s roguelike elements also include the use of “deck-building” mechanics, where the tiles you collect throughout your journey act as the “deck” you’ll use in battle. The more powerful your deck, the greater your chances of success—if you can make the right matches in the heat of battle.

Kaamos will be available on Steam on April 28, 2025.
