LittleBIGPlanet 2
SCORE: 92
It is always something special when we
review a game that has earned front cover rights. After all there are
only twelve games every year that can earn front cover rights.
LittleBigPlanet 2 was on the front cover of Family Friendly Gaming #38.
I have been eagerly awaiting this Playstation 3 (PS3) game for a very
long time. I even went out, purchased LittleBigPlanet, and reviewed it
in issue #42. Part of that had to do with preparing myself for
LittleBigPlanet 2, and part of it had to do with seeing if there are
improvements between games.
It is so cool to see how well my game play compared to everyone else out
there. Okay, so as I have been playing LittleBigPlanet 2 it is only
fellow media members. But getting the second best in a level, and being
in the top ten among my colleagues is still nice to know. What makes it
worse for them is I was not trying to find every item, and not trying to
go through the levels as fast as I could. In other words I could do
better if I wanted to.
The concept behind this franchise is pretty simple - Play, Create, and
Share. Play LittleBigPlanet 2 and collect various important items. These
can be ways to modify your SackBoy, stickers, decorations, and/or
creation items. Once the player has collected enough items, they can
start to create their very own levels on their personal moon. Then you
can share those with other players. Or you can see what others have
created.
The graphics are very impressive in LittleBigPlanet 2. Players need to
jump on certain enemies to get rid of them, and to throw items at other
enemies. This is the extent of the violent content in LittleBigPlanet 2.
I honestly expected a lot more violent content, and find LittleBigPlanet
2 to be very safe for all ages of the family. The first level of
LittleBigPlanet 2 pays homage to video game history along with the
designers behind this game. Old school gamers like myself appreciate
this kind of content.
The music and humor stick out for me. The characters do not take
themselves too seriously even though The Sucker could remove them from
this universe at any point in time. The music is very diverse in
LittleBigPlanet 2. I found certain levels that I did not want to leave
because I enjoyed the music so much. When it comes to level creation
time, there is a Music Sequencer in LittleBigPlanet 2. This allows
gamers to design their own custom music with multiple instruments.
LittleBigPlanet 2 upgrades the original in ways I would have never
considered. Make your own levels? Check. What could they do to improve
upon that? Make your own full scale games. This includes flying games,
racing games, puzzle games, sports games, shooters and more.
LittleBigPlanet 2 limits you mainly on your creativity, and your ideas.
LittleBigPlanet 2 comes with more than forty story levels in six worlds.
The two million levels created in LittleBigPlanet are accessible in
LittleBigPlanet 2, along with all the purchased and downloaded content.
LittleBigPlanet 2 will keep you busy for years.
I had one problem with LittleBigPlanet (in terms of gameplay), and am
happy to report it has been cleaned up in LittleBigPlanet 2. Swapping
between various depths can still feel weird, but it never cost me a
life. Getting stuck is never an issue since your character can be
reverted to the last continuation point. Those that have Playstation
Move can access ten additional levels. I had a lot of fun playing
LittleBigPlanet 2, and believe you will as well. The grappling hook is a
really fun tool to use.
Yes I am recommending LittleBigPlanet 2 to family and friends. This
Playstation 3 game exhibits many of the good points of the video game
industry. Getting to create your own content and share that with others
is fantastic. LittleBigPlanet 2 fleshes out a story much more than the
original. Sure it may be tongue in cheek, but I believe it helps start
the creative juices flowing. It was a real pleasure and a joy for me to
play and review LittleBigPlanet 2. Players get to help out the Alliance
in their time of need, which is a nice lesson.
