Pillow Pets
SCORE: 90
Pillow Pets is a fun Nintendo DS game for kids. This side scrolling platform game is designed so well that children can never fail. The one catch is you have to find a certain pillow pet in every single level. This hand held game does not allow children to leave a level until they have found the pillow pet in question. So a child can not lose, but they could get frustrated if they can not find the hidden critter.
There are some nice details in Pillow Pets. One of the things I noticed is the fire flies flying around the lamps. The color scheme in Pillow Pets is approachable by children of all ages. I personally love games that are very bright and colorful. Pillow Pets is one such game. The pillow pets have an odd way of walking. I believe this is because they are pillows walking around. The shape of their bodies is not exactly conducive to walking around. I did spend more time bouncing around or floating though.
The music in Pillow Pets is fantastic. I really appreciate how the three different worlds have different musical tracks. I appreciated each of the songs, and sounds while playing this DS game. Children who played Pillow Pets also enjoyed the music. They would bob their heads to the beat. Collecting various items produces fabulous special effect sounds that celebrate the accomplishment.
The main replay mechanic in Pillow Pets is to collect all of the items. The better a child does in a level the more items they unlock. These items can then be put on your pillow pet. Once a pillow pet is saved, then you can play with them. This is really neat because children have their very own favorite animals. Some will be happy with the lady bug, whereas others will want the frog (just as an example).
The levels in Pillow Pets are easy for an adult. Children will however enjoy exploring. There are mini quests to perform for characters, as well as the main level quest. Some of the pillow pets are hidden extremely well. I also noticed an intelligent design in the layouts of the later levels. The beginning levels are simple, even for a child. But later ones will offer them more of a challenge.
Children can learn to help others from Pillow Pets. The different
pillow pets get trapped in bad dreams. The player saves them in a caring
fashion. The sixteen levels in Pillow Pets will occupy a child for a few
weeks. Then they can start to dress up their character with the items
they unlocked. The real question many of our readers want to know is -
does a game based pillows put you to sleep? The answer is no.
