Spider-Man Edge of Time
SCORE: 78
I was given the honor of reviewing
Spider-Man Edge of Time on the Nintendo DS. The concept of this game is
really cool. A villain from Spider-Man 2099's time goes back to current
days Spider-Man and builds his company up. That way his company can be
even more powerful. As the time rift opens up the two Spider-Men can
communicate. What one does in one time affects the other one. This is a
wonderful way to include team work and to open doors.
Activision should be applauded for continuing to produce comic book
quality Spider-Man games. They also make sure to hit almost every major
current day console. This means a wider audience can be exposed to this
game, and the storyline contain therein. With all of that praise stated,
there is one flaw with this game. After the first ten minutes the game
stopped giving out hints. On your own to try and figure out what changes
what.
Thankfully Activision has toned down the violence in Spider-Man Edge of
Time. There are enemies in certain areas but there are enough open
spaces to give it a less violent feel. Since this is a comic book super
hero franchise we knew there would be some attire issues. It would be
difficult for Activision to stay true to certain character without it.
Although some day it might be fun to see them try and improve their
costumes.
The music in Spider-Man Edge of Time is cool, and the voice acting is
awesome. Peter Parker has quite a few wise cracks to throw out there. It
is amazing that he can take things so casually but still save the world.
The bad guys are about getting themselves more power, and ruling the
world. The good guys are there to stop them from their selfish deeds.
Spider-Man Edge of Time will be the cheapest in terms of cost. There are
some exclusive bosses in the Nintendo DS - Rhino, Shocker, and Menace.
If you like exploring areas, and trying to figure out what you need to
do to progress then you will be a fish in water. Otherwise you will be
replaying areas over and over again trying to find what needs to be done
next.
For me the lack of direction from the game was frustrating. I expect
some kind of clue as what to do next. Or where I need to go. At times I
could see something on the map, but was not able to get there. I even
had a Spider-Man trapped in a boss room after defeating the boss. I saw
no switches to get him out of there. After turning the game off and on,
and sending the Spider-Man 2099 to another area - it opened up. I am
still not clear on what I did to make that happen.
The wall climbing, swinging, and fighting enemies is very smooth in
Spider-Man Edge of Time. I especially noticed how easy it was to walk
along walls, ceilings, and around platforms. Spider-Man Edge of Time
would glitch from time to time, but not bad. The button lay out felt
weird at first, but works properly. I had fun with parts of Spider-Man
Edge of Time.
Spider-Man is there to save the day. He is a hero with special powers,
but he also feels very human. He could be like any high school or
college kid you may know. I enjoyed the puzzle elements of Spider-Man
Edge of Time, as well as the boss battles. I enjoy figuring out their
patterns and finding the opportune moment to strike. If you can bypass
the one lack of direction, you will enjoy Spider-Man Edge of Time on the
Nintendo DS.
