Taito Legends 2

You better be pretty darn good if you are going to call yourself a Legend. This PS2/PC/Xbox video game makes that claim with thirty nine different arcade video games. I hesitate to call these classics since few of them are. In fact Taito Legends 2 is a history lesson in why many games did not become franchises. Each of the games in this compilation are the arcade version. So you hit one button to simulate inserting a coin. This allows the player unlimited continues, and each game is defeatable.

One image you get to see a lot of in Taito Legends 2 is Now Loading. That image is still haunting me. The games in Taito Legends 2 are older, so their graphical prowess is much lower than current day games. Some of the old Atari 2600 looking games make me thankful I missed that era of gaming. Taito Legends 2 is inclusive of violent content, disgusting images, witches, ghosts, and more. Many of the female characters are dressed like prostitutes.

How did you older gamers ever handle the sounds in some of these games? Their audio capabilities were so limited that even during the Playstation 2 era they sounded bad. One of the games in Taito Legends 2 lets players journey through the seven hells. Why? Who wants to ever do that?

It takes quite a few hours to get through all of the games in Taito Legends 2. So there is some replay value if you are looking for a historical experience. My problem with Taito Legends 2 is there are very few good games in this compilation. Used copies of this game can be purchased for ten dollars, but I still feel it is a waste of money.

Some of the controls in Taito Legends 2 make little sense to me, however I quickly got up to speed. I had fun playing Alpine Ski, Cameltry, and Qix. Which is sad considering how many games are included in Taito Legends 2. Hardcore gamers will be interested in Dungeon Magic. Personally I think too much time has passed on that game.

Taito Legends 2 is one of the classic examples how poor regionalization used to be. There are characters purifying ghosts, working for strange gods, getting to play a witch, and traveling through hell. It was a real chore for me to play and review Taito Legends 2. I hope this franchise stays in the vault. No sequels are needed. Hopefully Taito ran out of “legendary” games. And uh I did not find anything legendary about this video game. If you see Taito Legends 2 in the used bin, keep on going.
