A Game of Dwarves
SCORE: 83
I hope you have been enjoying the humorous trailers for A Game of Dwarves as much as we have at Family Friendly Gaming. This PC game asks: "Can you dig it?" And it has no relation to Booker T. This game is all about building your empire. This is done by digging up resources, planting crops, building places for your dwarves to sleep.
A Game of Dwarves is part Minecraft, part Sims, and all its own unique atmosphere. This atmosphere involves a sophisticated sense of humor. At times characters can be mean to one another. Like the king to his son the prince. Can you guess which player we are? We are the prince.
The dwarves have a comical look to them. Do not let fool you though. There are warrior dwarves who will fight to defend your budding empire. The dwarves will eat and sleep as they need to. They can also die thanks to a variety of situations. Digging themselves down into a hole can be one of them. I could not get a ladder built for them, and could not figure out how to get stairs built in time. So they turned to tombstones. I just recruited more after a brief mourning period.
My one complaint about A Game of Dwarves is the control scheme. We have a couple of ways to move the camera around. We then have two buttons to go up and down levels. Since the dwarves dig down into the earth we have to be able to go up and down. Mixing these two is clunky at best. A Game of Dwarves is a slow game so we can take our time, but it still frustrated me trying to see something.
The king is trying to teach his son the prince some responsibility. As well as taking care of those entrusted to him. There is also a theme of reclaiming former glory. I applaud the king for trying to teach his son about responsibility. I am curious as to why those lessons were not reinforced at a younger age.
A Game of Dwarves is a PC game that will stick with me for some time
to come. It can grow on you like fungus. The kind that glows in the dark
and is underground. Players can learn how to manage resources without a
degree in PC gaming. A Game of Dwarves might work well on the consoles
in my humble opinion.
