Cafe International

Paul and I were recently discussing a trend in the video game industry. Board games are making the jump to the digital formats. At Family Friendly Gaming we have noticed multiple board games making it to the iPhone/iPod Touch platform. Cafe International is the most recent board game to port to the iOS that we are reviewing.

The first thing I did when I started Cafe International was to go through the tutorial. This is a very important thing to do based on how Cafe International is played. There are tables with flags from different countries. Four people can sit at a table. Characters can sit at one table while occupying a chair in another table since they overlap.

Playing cards produces points. Getting the last person on a table produces even more points. Cafe International is all about equality. We need two men and two women on the tables. There can be two women and one man, but not two men and one woman. All of this may sound confusing at first, but once I played a few games it made perfect sense. There is a strategy guide out there for download if you get really stuck.

Players are also provided three hints if they can not figure out a move. Sometimes only one card can be played. Other times a card has to be discard - which costs you points by the way. The  best strategy I found was to try and finish off as many tables as possible. The one complaint I have about Cafe International is the graphics are a bit on the small side. Especially when I was trying to see the flag on a characters card.

Male and female characters in certain countries look very similar. So you may want to pay attention to that. If you try to play a card where it will not go this game will tell the player why it can not be played there. The music in Cafe International is fantastic. It really enhances this app in a variety of ways. The little sound bytes from the characters were interesting but I grew tired of them quickly.

Cafe International is a fun little game that families can enjoy. It would be great to see more board games like Cafe International arrive on the iPhone/iPod Touch hand held devices in the future. This platform is really starting to dominate and it is great to see wonderful apps like this one. I am thankful that Family Friendly Gaming was provided a download code for this review.
