Tomba
SCORE: 81
MonkeyPaw Games listens to gamers and
provides services they have requested for years. Tomba! was a
Playstation (PS1) game that became rare. Supply was low, demand was
high, so the price of Tomba! went through the roof. Video game
collectors and investors sought out a copy of this rare game. That is
until now. Tomba! is now on the PS3 and PSP thanks to MonkeyPaw Games.
There are two schools of thought here at Family Friendly Gaming. Some
are pleased that this Playstation game has been re-released, and for a
fraction of the cost of buying the case, disc, and instruction manual.
Others are displeased because they feel it will hurt the price of this
game, and cut into potential profits.
Tomba! has pink hair. Which is not the only odd thing about him. He can
climb walls, go into the background, and flings pigs around. My first
thought of the story in Tomba! is he was after pigs way before those
birds got angry. The old PS1 graphics have not aged that well. With that
put on the table, Tomba! has plenty of animations, and great anime cut
scenes.
Tomba! is a real character. He is a mix between Bonk and Tarzan. Then
take that mix and make him a beauty school drop out from Grease. Tomba!
came from the brain of Tokuro Fuijiwara. He came up with the Mega Man
series. He has a very creative mind. Playing Tomba! for a few minutes
leaves that impression.
There is cartoon violence as players jump on animals (like pigs, and
birds), fling them around and either slam them down or launch in a
direction. Tomba! has a weapon (mace) that can also be used against the
enemies. The two layers to the levels (forefront, and background) are a
neat game play mechanic. I do not recall when that was originated.
Tomba! has a great sound to it. The music is upbeat, and very alive.
Tomba! has an off the wall humor to it. Not everyone will get it at
first. It is definitely something to look forward to. Please create a
PS1 save before playing Tomba!. There is nothing more irritating that
playing to the first save only to realize your system is not set up to
save a PS1 game.
The game play in Tomba! can feel strange at times. Especially when
swinging on one branch trying to jump to the next one. Timing is the
key, and Tomba! has some lag in this regard. I planned ahead of time.
There are numerous quests to perform in Tomba! which make it a fun game
to play. It is nice that Tomba! was not lost to history, and we were
given an opportunity to review it.
