Final Fantasy VIII
SCORE: 65
How many
gamers care about history? Probably not many. How many gamers care about
video game history? Probably quite a few. Final Fantasy VIII on the
Personal Computer is a piece of video game history. It is the beginning
of Final Fantasy moving towards adults.
Before Squaresoft and Enix merged there was Final Fantasy VIII. I know
some gamers think of Final Fantasy VII as the point where the franchise
started to target adults. It was the first major commercial success of
the role playing genre in the United States. Final Fantasy VIII did new
things too. It was the first time a love story was told. Or at least
they tried to tell a love story.
Modern Final Fantasy video games repeat many of the things in Final
Fantasy VIII. Having a small group that is rebelling against a corrupt
government is a central theme in almost every Final Fantasy game. The
emotional aspects of Final Fantasy VIII showed the world role playing
games can make you care about the characters.
The port of Final Fantasy VIII to the PC is the most definitive version
of the home console video game thus far. So many of the screens bring
back memories. Unfortunately the graphics in Final Fantasy VIII show
their age. This was a Playstation video game. There is also role playing
violence and enticement to lust issues in Final Fantasy VIII.
The music of Final Fantasy VIII, ah the music. It continues to be
fantastic. It sticks in the brain. I welcome the return of the music of
Final Fantasy VIII. The language is another story. I could have done
without the bad language. The realistic looking characters exhibit their
depth and many times attitudes. Players can make moral choices with a
variety of questions from NPCs.
Magic is found in Final Fantasy VIII. For families that avoid magic,
this is important to know. There are also creatures that can be summoned
to fight for you. A card game is present, as well as Chocobos World.
Characters can also junction their attacks, magic, and guardian forces.
Final Fantasy VIII is definitely retro. The Playstation 4 just launched
so this was on three Sony home consoles back. It is neat to see this
game port over to Steam. Families can learn history of the franchise and
see what role playing was like back in 1999.
