Jackie Robinson My Story
SCORE: 74
Watching Jackie Robinson My Story on DVD
brought up a lot of interesting thoughts. This DVD is from many decades
ago where there was segregation in America. Where being better than the
rest of the world was not fully realized. A time when black people felt
like second class citizens.
What is most interesting to me is how far the pendulum has swung. Now
white people are treated as second class citizens in many areas of
America. In fact many places will not allow young white male Christians
access, and they are treated as second class citizens. Discrimination
against whites and Christians is common place in America today.
Maybe in fifty years or so there will be a documentary made on those
currently suffering from discrimination in America. Hopefully it will
not take that long though. Jackie Robinson My Story touches on more than
his baseball career. It is a large portion of his story, but not the
whole thing.
Jackie Robinson My Story bounces from old black and white footage and
pictures to Stephen Hill in color. Mr Hill tells the story of Jackie
Robinson. In his own words, and relays many of the same emotions. The
fear, frustrations, profanity and more. It is obvious he hates the NY
Yankees, and the NY Giants (before they moved to San Francisco).
What is funny is how often Jackie Robinson My Story speaks against
hatred, yet he himself had quite a bit of hatred for certain groups.
Jackie Robinson My Story does not try to gloss over this double
standard. Nor does it offer any evidence of any of his claims. Does he
embellish some of his claims? We are left to our own opinions on the
matter.
Jackie Robinson My Story offers a very opinionated one sided perspective
on the events in his life. Many times in Jackie Robinson My Story he
plays the victim card. He comes close to accepting responsibility for
the problems his son faced. Viewers are left with the realization that
there is a price for neglecting family.
Jackie Robinson admits in Jackie Robinson My Story that he was an
opportunist who spoke his mind and ruffled feathers. He did not care who
he offended with his stubbornness. He admitted he did not like turning
the other cheek, and once that constraint was lifted he was off to the
races to offend. Yet he did so to try and reshape America into what he
thought would be better.
Racism is a central theme in Jackie Robinson My Story. And it abounds on
all sides. Throughout the history of mankind groups have oppressed and
subjugated other groups. All over the world it continues on to this day.
Conservatives, Christians, whites, and others are treated like dirt.
Slavery continues to this day in Africa and Asia.
I love the ending of Jackie Robinson My Story. He admits that others
helped him along the way. He has others to thank for his successes.
Jackie Robinson My Story is not a movie for children. The language, and
themes will require a fair amount of monitoring, and explaining. Some
things you may not be able to explain. Like why discrimination exists to
this day, or why its just different groups being discriminated against
now.
