Oz the Great and Powerful

I had heard some positive things about Oz the Great and Powerful and some negative things. So I was very curious to see how it would stand up in the Family Friendly Gaming Nation. In case you were not aware, Oz the Great and Powerful is the prequel to The Wizard of Oz. We learn how the wizard comes to Oz.

The wizard goes by the name Oz as well. He is a flim flam con man. A sham artist who is a magician. He performs for small crowds in a traveling circus. He is a ladies man, and has to run in a hot air balloon because of his misdeeds. He is close to death and pleads with God. He will do something great if he is spared.

From here he lands in the land of Oz. He meets all kinds of fantastic, and strange creatures. Not everything is as it seems though. He finds out there is a prophecy about him, and he is to be king. Who he can trust becomes confusing for a portion of the movie. Who is the wicked witch becomes clear later on.

All of these people look up to him. He is to be their savior. Yet he just wants to run away because he has no magical powers. He uses technology to confound and confuse. At the end of the movie we arrive exactly where we expected to at the beginning of the film.

Oz the Great and Powerful starts out in black and white. It finally goes to color when we reach the land of Oz. There is all kinds of wonderful colors used at the beginning. Then we adapt, and face darker portions of the land. There is some action violence in this movie as the witches throw around powerful attacks. Fireworks are also used as weapons.

The problem with any prequel is we know who lives and who dies. We know no matter how bad it gets certain characters will survive. The key to matching any prequel is to marvel in the how we get to the destination. Besides I hear they say it is the journey that is more important than the destination.
