Pikmin 3
SCORE: 82
I feel
like a pancake being cooked when it comes to the Wii U. I am flipping,
and flopping all over the place. I just want it to be cooked completely
through. I want to avoid that doughy taste in the middle if I can help
it. I can see so many sides of the Wii U that it is really difficult to
come to one concrete opinion.
Things are made even worse thanks to releases like Pikmin 3 on the Wii
U. Nintendo has put forth a solid title that streamlines many things. At
the same time I can still see room for improvement in the franchise.
Nintendo is also using Pikmin 3 to promote community play with Bingo
Battle.
Three commanders occupy Pikmin 3. Players get to swap between them as
they play the game. Players can send them out on separate missions to
different places on the map. It took me a few tries to figure that part
out, even though the game explains it.
The Wii U Gamepad is used as a second screen in multiple ways. During
the main part of the game it shows the map. Scrolling around on the map
pauses the game, which is important since there is only so much time in
any given day. Thankfully we can go back and replay any previous day
with the greatest of ease.
These three leaders are on the planet to collect resources. In the
beginning of Pikmin 3 this is extremely important. As is getting all
your Pikmin within a certain circle before night falls. I could easily
return them to their onion, but I could not figure out how to get my
leaders back into their ship early.
The different types of Pikmin come with different benefits. The Red
Pikmin are fire resistant for example. The Rock Pikmin can break through
glass. Whatever Pikmin type takes creatures or flowers to the onion will
produce more of that type. Keep that in mind as you are building your
Pikmin army.
There is comic mischief and violence in Pikmin 3. Odd looking creatures
will be in your way, so the game encourages us to dispose of them. They
are hostile and will attack you if you give them the chance. The Pikmin
will fight for you. They will take these things down for you. The E10+
rating is a good one for this franchise in my humble opinion.
