Snowboard Xtreme

We are seeing a trend here at Family Friendly Gaming. There are more app like games making it to the Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DS platforms. Which is something our editorial staff asked for years ago. It is neat to see Nintendo opening the door, and allowing us to play games like Snowboard Xtreme.

Snowboard Xtreme is a downhill snowboarding slaloms game. Players must maneuver their snowboarder to the right of the red flags, and to the left of the green flags. There are obstacles in the way - things like logs, rocks and trees. Hitting one will stun your snowboarder and slow him down.

Time is the biggest factor in Snowboard Xtreme. Players start with so much time, and the clock ticks away. If you let it get to zero then it is game over. The time left over on the first race carries over to the second race. Players gain more time by going past the flags on the proper sides. Faster is better in Snowboard Xtreme.

Snowboard Xtreme is selling for $1.99 or 200 Nintendo DSi points. This is reasonable in my book, especially for the amount of content. The hardest part about Snowboard Xtreme is being able to rank in the top ten scores. Turning and hitting things slow down the snowboarder, but must be done to progress.

My biggest knock against Snowboard Xtreme is the lack of a speed boost button. Most other arctic racing games allow the players to hit a button to speed up while going down the slopes. The trade off is it takes longer to turn, and not being able to turn while speeding up. I hope to see that implemented in sequels.

Snowboard Xtreme reminds me of that old PC skiing game Ski Free. Snowboard Xtreme looks better, and plays better. It does not contain a free roaming feature, but again we have to keep the price of Snowboard Xtreme in mind. I love the whole time aspect in Snowboard Xtreme, although one mistake can negate great performances in previous stages.
