Tales of Xillia

There are so few role playing game franchises left that we RPG gamers need to do what we can to keep the genre alive. Tales of Xillia is the latest in the Tales franchise from Namco Bandai Games. This Playstation 3 exclusive game contains certain elements we have all loved about the franchise.

The action based battle systems, the deep character development, and the war between entities. The many cut scene movies keep the story flowing - even when we are on side quests. Tales of Xillia likes to have us chase rabbits through the fields.

The Lumines Orbs is one of the coolest features in Tales of Xillia. This is where new skills are earned, and where characters improve their stats. Check out the Lumines Orbs after each level up for a character. That spider web will grow as you fill it up.

At the beginning of the game players decide if they want to take on the role of Jude Mathis or Milla Maxwell. In a role reversal (that hopefully does not lead to gender confusion) Jude is the kind, caring, and considerate medical student. Milla is the gruff, callous, and inconsiderate lord of the spirits.

Tales of Xillia has major spiritual connections in the storyline. Characters have mana which is used for magical purposes. The bad guys are draining the mana from people to build weapons. Those weapons endanger the spirits. You guess it - we have to help these spirits.

Milla is one of the characters in Tales of Xillia that does not wear a lot of clothing. It must be a Japanese thing to obsess over the underwear of female characters - especially little girls. Tales of Xillia would have been so much better without those images burned into the brain.

The battles in Tales of Xillia take place within a circular field. Characters can launch spells (they can be difficult to launch due to the controls), or run up and hack and slash them. This can get extremely boring after a few hundred battles. Fields in Tales of Xillia are filled with enemies.

Expect to spend numerous hours playing through Tales of Xillia. Role playing gamers will easily get 20-30 hours of game play out of Tales of Xillia. More can be earned if you decide to hunt down every single mission, quest, and side quest.
