Dr Luigi

Nintendo ended the year of Luigi with the release of Dr. Luigi on the Wii U. This is close to the Dr. Mario games from the past. The main difference is Luigi is in the white coat taking on the viruses in the bottle. There are some new pill types as well.

Dr. Luigi contains Operation L, Virus Buster, Online Battle, and Retro Remedy. Those are the four main modes in this downloadable home console game selling for $14.99. One to four family members can enjoy this game at a time. There are multiple difficulty settings as well as multiple speed settings. You can also start in whichever level you want.

The 'L' shaped pills reminds me of Tetris. They can be harder to use than one would expect. I know I had to adapt and learn new strategies, especially when the colors on the pills were confusing. At least to me, and trying to figure out how to use them.

The match making of the online battle in Dr. Luigi is horrendous. My very first game was against someone who had won 122 times online. As you can expect I was beaten easily. The next couple of matches went the same way. Really good players trashing new players. Which made me decide to no longer play Dr. Luigi online. Losing against way better players with no handicap to even out the game play is no fun.

Dr. Luigi is bright and colorful. The viruses have nice little animations on the left side of the screen. The pill colors are distinctive enough that there is no confusion. The music ranges in Dr. Luigi. Different music for different modes. It is rather limited in my opinion. And some songs in Dr. Luigi annoy me.

Families can have a lot of fun with Dr. Luigi. The flexibility of the game play as well as the different modes helps Dr. Luigi stand out amongst the numerous downloadable titles on the Wii U. Dr. Luigi encourages quick mental recognition, as well as pattern placement.
