Unepic
SCORE: 70

Unepic is
clever in so many different ways. It starts off with a group of young
men playing a dungeons and dragons kind of role playing game. One of
them needs to go to the bathroom. The light goes out and he is now in a
dungeon. He thinks it is just a hallucination.

From there we meet different characters and start an action adventure
role playing game in a castle. We fight off hordes of monsters, and meet
all kinds of different creatures. We learn the back story, and Unepic is
very clever in referencing different franchises. I noticed references to
different games, and science fiction television shows and movies.

The ESRB did drop the ball in terms of the descriptors in Unepic. Which
should come as no surprise since we continue to pick up their slack.
There are language issues, and suggestive themes. In fact some of the
language is intense, and the overt sexual comments are there for cheap
		laughs for the worldly.

The language, sexual content, blood, and violence mean Unepic is for the
older members of the family only. I would not let children play Unepic.
They may come asking what certain things are. Or worse yet repeat
		something at an inopportune moment.

As an adult gamer I was drawn into this dark fantasy world. One of my
favorite activities in Unepic is to light the candles, and torches. Not
only is there symbolism there, it makes playing the game easier. Without
the light, this is a dark game where ladders may be missed. Since we
move from floor to floor via ladders (unless you fall through a pit)
being able to see becomes important.

The hero in Unepic is pretty messed up. He lies to a variety of
characters, exhibits a bad attitude, and is generally cynical. I will
say he does not take himself or this fantasy world too seriously. Which
has been a trend in video games for some time now.

Unepic contains plenty of items, magic spells, creatures, weapons, and
armors. The mapping in Unepic reminded me of Castlevania Symphony of the
Night. It is obvious Unepic is paying homage to that game. As well as
beating a boss to find a key that opens a new area. There are numerous
		quests to complete in Unepic.

The Wii U Gamepad is fantastic for Unepic. It is so easy to hot key
weapons, and healing items. I could swap between them in the heat of
battle with little thought. I also liked being able to quickly swap
between quests and their needed items on the Wii U Gamepad.

If you are an adult looking for a lengthy action adventure role playing
game on the Wii U, then you should take a long look at Unepic. You might
find yourself playing it, and thinking the first two letters need to be
		removed.
