Yoshi's New Island
SCORE: 87
It is
really nice to see the Yoshi Island series come back in the form of
Yoshi's New Island on the Nintendo 3DS. The crayon like graphics mixed
with Yoshi, baby Mario, and many of the distinctive enemies is a nice
fit on this hand held device.
Nintendo knows that Yoshi Island games can be difficult. So if you die
too many times in a level you can get a pair of wings. Die another time
or two and you can get golden wings. That means no enemy can damage you.
All you have to worry about there is the jumps.
Yoshi carries baby Mario on his back through the levels. When Yoshi is
hit, baby Mario floats around in a bubble. Well he floats for a few
seconds. It depends on how far you have built the gauge. I almost always
could get baby Mario back when I took a hit.
Secrets are everywhere in Yoshi's New Island on the Nintendo 3DS. You
can blow through levels easily if you want, or you can try and find all
of the collectible items. Bear in mind certain floating question mark
clouds are invisible until you make physical contact with them.
Yoshi's New Island is a safe adventure for families. There are enemies
that can be swallowed and turned into eggs. Other enemies can be bounced
on - and they pop out of existence. Players can shoot eggs at enemies.
That is the extent of violence in Yoshi's New Island.
The coolest new addition to the franchise is giant eggs. These huge eggs
in Yoshi's New Island are useful in knocking out massive amounts of
blocks that are in your way. They can also help you get to the bottom of
the water levels - which is needed to progress in certain levels.
There are mini levels in Yoshi's New Island where Yoshi turns into a
variety of different vehicles. These mini levels control via the
gyroscope on the Nintendo 3DS. Let me be blunt - I am not a fan of these
mini levels. The controls did not always cooperate with me.
All in all Yoshi's New Island is a fun little game for families. I love
the theme of keeping a baby safe while adventuring through interesting
and diverse areas. Assistance when the player is having problems is
fantastic. If you want to parkour the level you can ignore the wings. It
is nice players are given the choice.
