Armello

Armello is a really good blend of strategy, and board gaming. The coolest part about Armello is there are no pieces to lose. The downside is you never ever wind up owning anything since Armello is a downloadable only video game. Armello would be a great game for the indie physical copy movement the EIC wrote about here at Family Friendly Gaming. Innovative ideas for an innovative game.

The premise in Armello is simple. The king has been poisoned by evil Rot and it is slowly killing him. Four different animal clans (Bear, Rabbit, Rat, and Wolf) compete to take over the kingdom. Or to become the successor. Or to get more evil Rot than the king and take it over that way. There are multiple paths to victory in Armello. How you play Armello is all up to you.

We were really bummed here at Family Friendly Gaming that there was no local multiplayer mode. We could pass around the controller to play Armello. That method works for games like Monopoly Family Fun Pack on the Playstation 4. There is a multiplayer on the PS4, but it involves playing others online and paying for a Playstation Plus membership.

Graphically Armello started out like some anime. There was blood, violence, and political intrigue. The various spaces and characters look okay. The music in Armello is majestic. So it fits a strategy kingdom conquest kind of a video game. There is also some red after players roll the dice and attack the enemies or other characters. That reminds me, the other heroes in Armello can and will attack you. Not very heroic of them. Can't trust anyone these days.

Armello has easy quests for the player that will strengthen them. Which is important when you want to go into the castle and attack the king. Cards are drawn from items, spells, and trickster. Players can equip the cards to become more powerful, have better defenses, etc. Going straight at the king at your earliest opportunity it suicide in Armello. Players must be patient, and utilize other players to help.

At the end of every turn the king lets the most worthy successor (the hero that has caused him the least amount of grief) pick a special card. These change conditions of the battle field, and what the royal guards (protecting the king) will do. Pay close attention to these because they can make the game easier or harder. I like Armello. I just wish it had a local multiplayer option.
