Axiom Verge
SCORE: 66
Video game companies are constantly morphing and changing their
franchises. They add new game play element, go from 2D to 3D, and more.
Sometimes we gamers want to play something familiar. Sometimes we yearn
for more games from a certain era. As these large video game companies
march to make billions off of us they leave things behind. This is where
indie video games come into play.
Axiom Verge is like a darker 16-bit Metroid video game. It is on the
Playstation 4, Playstation Vita, and Personal Computer. Family Friendly
Gaming was provided a download code for Axiom Verge on the Playstation
4. Players are required to shoot the various enemies multiple times in
Axiom Verge. The enemies explode in a gory, gross, and disgusting mess.
Sometimes they leave behind what looks like blood. Which is what heals
our characters health.
The story in Axiom Verge starts out showing all kinds of promise.
Eventually it slows down until I nearly forgot there was a story. Bosses
have massive amounts of health, and require technique to defeat. Axiom
Verge is a video game only for the adult members of the family. After
playing Axiom Verge I was more aggressive, and impatient. I can tell
Axiom Verge influenced my mood and attitude.
Like Metroid we explore in Axiom Verge. There are constantly obstacles
in our way. So we need to find the tool that allows us to get past the
obstacle. Axiom Verge can get frustrating. I noticed a couple of
instances where I would bring up the map and see where I needed to go
next. Not sure I had to go, I went all around checking each area seeing
if I could finally get through. Or where there had been a fork in the
road so to speak.
Axiom Verge is huge. It does the genre justice with its size alone. The
retro graphics are cool if you are into retro games. If not, you will
probably complain about how grainy and pixelated things are. The bad
language was not needed and hurts Axiom Verge. The difficulty of Axiom
Verge is up there. Expect to die - often. Axiom Verge respawns players
back at the last save keeping their map progress.
