Backyard Basketball

Family Friendly Gaming was provided a copy of Backyard Basketball on the Personal Computer recently. This kids sports video game takes real athletes and shrinks them down to children. Even though Backyard Basketball is rated 'E' for Everyone by the ESRB, it has a note on the back that it is for ages seven and up. I had my ups and downs while playing Backyard Basketball on the PC.

The movies in the intro of Backyard Basketball are really cool. The bright and colorful graphics are neat to see. The small screen with the small characters is not so great. Especially when players are running around really close to one another. It can be hard to tell where your player is, and who you are trying to pass to. The menu screens in Backyard Basketball are confusing. I had to get help to start a game.

The music and sounds are nice in Backyard Basketball. The repetitive comments in a game have no bearing on what is going on, and they get annoying really fast. Backyard Basketball is a very fast paced game, so it would be hard for the computer to keep up with what is going on. Some of the comments got old in the first game I played. Imagine what happened at the end of a season. I turned the volume completely off.

The controls in Backyard Basketball can be confusing. It is all about where the mouse is hovering. I could not get the Family Friendly Gaming PC controller working with Backyard Basketball. Which is a shame because Backyard Basketball is hard to play with the existing control schemes on the Personal Computer. Backyard Basketball is a game that works better on the home consoles in my opinion.

Families can collect Cards, enjoy a Hall of Fame, a Season, and a Single Player mode in Backyard Basketball. There is enough to do in Backyard Basketball to warrant the price. Just know the announcers can get annoying, and the controls can take some time to get used to. The computer loves to cheat players in Backyard Basketball. Or maybe it was just me.
