Colonial Conquest

I like Risk like video games. I wish there were all kinds of board choices to play. I would buy physical copies of Risk like strategy games on a plethora of different systems. When The Emperor told me about Colonial Conquest I begged to be the one to play and review it. How does that song go? Oh yes: "be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it." I got it alright.

Colonial Conquest looks okay, and has some nice (albeit sleep inducing) music. Players can choose from six nations to play. They are Great Britain, Germany, France, USA, Japan and Russia. The late 1800s, and early 1900s is a nice history period for families to play a war strategy game. Finally someone lets us move away from World War II. I like WWII turn based strategy games. I want more than that time period though.

What kills Colonial Conquest is the insane collision detection. Menu screens have the worst collision detection of a mouse I have ever seen. I even tried a second mouse, and rebooted the Personal Computer. Nothing fixed Colonial Conquest. I finally figured out that the collision detection for any menu screen button was three to six inches to the left. This problem is on the maps where we play as well. Although the command window at the bottom left of the screen does not have this problem.

I pulled my hair out in frustration thanks to this collision detection blunder. If that were not tough enough I could never tell if neighboring forces were equal to, greater than, or less than. It was a gamble to attack anyone. Sometimes I won, sometimes my troops were decimated. A turn can be wasted with spying if the right troops are in the right area. There is no guarantee the other country won't make a change though.

I wanted to like Colonial Conquest so much. Colonial Conquest had so much potential. A tutorial is needed to explain how to play. The collision detection issue needs to be addressed. And I need to be paid for providing this Quality Control work. I do not expect a check to be coming anytime soon from the company for the services I have rendered. Especially since I doubt few people will purchase Colonial Conquest after reading my review.
