Epic Word Search Collection
SCORE: 80
We really liked Word Search by POWGI from Lightwood Games. So my
expectations for Epic Word Search Collection on the Nintendo 3DS were
really high. Maybe I set myself up for a bit of a let down. I will get
into my beef with Epic Word Search Collection on the Nintendo 3DS later
on in this review. Hopefully I can explain it succinctly for Family
Friendly Gaming Universe.
The searches in Epic Word Search Collection are Food, Movie, Rock,
Sports and TV. Each of these has one massively huge screen that contains
different content. Meaning you can scroll from Jurassic Park right into
Star Wars. The word searches were not put into their own separate
levels. I suppose that saves a small amount of time in menu screen
selection.
If you scroll a bit you will notice the words on the top of the screen
changing. The reason for this is the words are not always visible on the
screen as you are scrolling across. The words stay at the top as long as
one letter in the word is visible on the screen. Herein lies the
problem. It is very difficult to find a word when only part of it is in
your viewing range. Scrolling the screen can help find the word
sometimes. Not always. I found this game play mechanic frustrating.
I wish Epic Word Search Collection had set screens set in selectable
levels. That way I would know a word was on the screen - and not just
part of it. It is easier to find certain words when keying off certain
parts of the word. Looking for two 'N's side by side in a word like
'TENNIS' for example. There are also no hints in Epic Word Search
Collection whatsoever. I wish there was some hint system to help me when
I am completely stuck and frustrated. Have a bar that builds and only
allows a hint once every minute or something like that.
Epic Word Search Collection looks like Word Search by POWGI. The music
in Epic Word Search Collection is fantastic. I enjoyed listening to the
sounds while trying to find more words. Epic Word Search Collection will
make your family use their brains trying to find patterns. There are
plenty of words in Epic Word Search Collection that are not part of the
dictionary of words found within this downloadable only hand held video
game.
I give Lightwood Games credit for trying something different with Epic
Word Search Collection on the Nintendo 3DS. I suspect there are members
of Family Friendly Gaming Universe that appreciate having to scroll the
screen to try and find the full word. If you are anything like me, you
will get frustrated and disappointed. With that one issue aside there is
plenty of good in Epic Word Search Collection for families.
