Minecraft Story Mode
SCORE: 73
I am so thankful that Family Friendly Gaming was provided a retail
version of Minecraft Story Mode on the Playstation 4. The disc contains
the Season Pass. Which means it comes with episode one on the disc, and
then episodes two through five have to be downloaded to the system. I
have played through episodes one and two thus far. As I write this
review episode three and on have not been released.
If you are expecting a normal Minecraft kind of a game you are going to
be very disappointed in Minecraft Story Mode. This game is more of an
interactive story. If you have played games from TellTale Games before
then you know the interactive story kinds of games they publish. There
is lots of talking with players interacting at certain points. We can
move in certain directions at certain times, we can also press certain
buttons to make certain interactions happen - like in battles.
There are numerous conversations in Minecraft Story Mode. There are also
plenty of choices. Players can decide to answer questions in certain
ways. This would be the biggest reason to replay an episode - to make
different choices and see slightly different conversations. This
branching story possibility is really neat to see in a modern day home
console video game.
Fighting in Minecraft Story Mode can be a bit clunky and slow. Do not
expect Minecraft like fighting in Minecraft Story Mode. Thankfully the
fighting scenes were not that often. The same goes for the bad language
in Minecraft Story Mode. I caught a few words here and there while
playing Minecraft Story Mode. Monsters and characters can have things
like arrows sticking out of their bodies.
The voice acting is really good in Minecraft Story Mode. The storyline
is interesting and engaging. I am very curious to see where this story
goes from the end of episode two. The depth of the story is one of the
best parts of Minecraft Story Mode. The short episodes is one of the
worst parts. Episode two was over a gig to download. So I expect the
full and final game will be large.
I was a major Minecraft fanboy until Microsoft bought off Mojang. I
still like it from time to time. My younger brother still plays the iOS
version of Minecraft. We were once deep into the lore and stories
related to Minecraft. Minecraft Story Mode feels like an interactive
Youtube video. You know the cool ones that fans used to make before
Microsoft ruined it? Minecraft Story Mode reminds me of those videos.
Just fleshed out a lot more.
