Nihilumbra

Nihilumbra shows the entire video game industry that an interesting video game can be created, that keeps players interested and engaged from start to finish. Nihilumbra talks to the player frequently. It hints at things that have happened. It is then up to the player to accept those at face value or try to see if there is some deeper meaning.

Players start out in Nihilumbra being born. They grow up thanks to experiences and colors. Colors are very important in Nihilumbra since they grant the player special abilities. For example blue makes the floor icy and thus lets us jump larger gaps. Red turns the floor/wall/ceiling hot and burns the enemies. There is blue, green, brown, red, and yellow. All have different effects on the environment.

Players will send enemies to their death, have other enemies destroy one another, and burn them to death. There is a degree of violent content within Nihilumbra. The core element of this hand held video game is the puzzles. Finding a way through each of the rooms.

Nihilumbra works better on the PS Vita than as an app in my personal opinion. The biggest downside to Nihilumbra is the short length of play. I was just getting into Nihilumbra and it was telling me my journey was coming to a close. Nihilumbra can be beaten in two to three hours during your first interaction with it.

Nihilumbra has a wonderful sound to it. The music in Nihilumbra is fantastic. I enjoyed the voice actor telling me a variety of things. He offered hints that were always timely and helpful. He also made a variety of cryptic comments. Nihilumbra teaches us a couple of lessons on the topics of life, guilt, and regret.
