Super Destronaut

If you are a long time reader of Family Friendly Gaming you know we throw out all kinds of different ideas. We discuss games we would like to see. We bring up ideas that we think would work on the market place. Super Destronaut on the Wii U fulfills one of those requests. This is a modern day Space Invaders video game with quite a few fun, and interesting twists.

Super Destronaut is a downloadable home console video game where we play in Classic, Time Attack, or Multiplayer. Yes that is right, you can play Super Destronaut with a friend. Both of ya'll try to destroy as many odd looking alien things as you can. Multiplayer allows players to take as many hits as they want. The goal is to destroy as many alien things as possible. You will lose points for the hits you take.

In Classic mode you can only take so many hits before it is game over. If you are spamming the shoot button you will miss your score screen. I wish there had been a different button chosen to make that go away. I wound up hitting the fire button through that screen and missing my scores almost every time. The Time Attack mode takes away time for every hit you take. So take out the aliens to keep time flowing.

Super Destronaut has bright and colorful ships and aliens on a black grid background. This works really well. There are no shields to hide behind in Super Destronaut. You can get yourself stuck in a corner with missiles coming at you. Super Destronaut requires players to be fast, efficient, and to avoid taking hits themselves. You will need to be nibble while playing Super Destronaut.

I have one topic that I am compelled to bring up. We are shooting things with laser fire, and with missiles. We are getting hit with some kind of energy weapons, and missiles. The ESRB could not find one word in the English dictionary to describe these violent acts. And yet the ESRB is out there in public bragging they inform families of the content within video games. This game is another example where the ESRB has dropped the ball. A ball that is spending more time on the ground than in anyone's hands.

I had fun playing Super Destronaut. The Multiplayer mode is one of the best parts about this game. It is awesome to play locally with another family member. The various enemies and formations put a cool new face on an old classic. Petite Games has caught my eye with Super Destronaut on the Wii U. I am curious to see what they come up with in the future.
