Last Days in the Desert
SCORE: 50
Family Friendly Gaming was recently provided two copies of Last Days
in the Desert on DVD. We gave one away at church and used the other one
for this review. I have seen a lot of Christian movies over the years.
Last Days in the Desert fits somewhere around The Last Temptation of
Christ for me. There are four actors in Last Days in the Desert. They
are Ewan McGregor, Tye Sheridan, Ciaran Hinds, and Ayelet Zurer. Maybe
some old lady in another scene.
Last Days in the Desert is not based on the Holy Bible. Some of the
content found within Last Days in the Desert could be defined as heresy.
I know there are parts of Last Days in the Desert that can be considered
offensive to Christians. Hence my comparison to The Last Temptation of
Christ. Last Days in the Desert tries to show Jesus near the end of his
forty days and forty nights in the wilderness. We do not even get
Biblical temptations from Satan. Jesus eats while he is supposed to be
fasting.
Ewan McGregor plays both Jesus and Satan. That can lead to some
confusing conversations as we tried to figure out who was who. One of
the strangest things in Last Days in the Desert for me is the one sided
conversations between Jesus and God the Father. Everything I have
studied and personally experienced is a two way conversation. Last Days
in the Desert makes Jesus all alone except for his companion Satan.
Which is freaky.
There are short scenes here and there in Last Days in the Desert that
make no sense. A bug crawling up the arm of Jesus. Later we see more
bugs. Why? The pointlessness and futility of so much of this movie left
us scratching our heads. Why was that needed was a constant question
that came up. The slow and boring nature of this movie made some viewers
look for a light saber or Jar-Jar to come out.
Last Days in the Desert is desolate and depressing. A father who can not
talk to his son. A son who wants to get away from the father. A mother
who is dying. Jesus kind of there watching. Every so often throwing out
a small helpful tidbit. Last Days in the Desert promotes old earth
theory. There is also blood, death, nudity, and more in this 100 minute
move. The DVD has no extras at all.
