Riptide GP Renegade

Every so often there is an app that comes along that catches our eye here at Family Friendly Gaming. Riptide GP Renegade is one such app. This water racing video game set in a drowned future looks good, sounds good, and is fun to play. There are upgrades in skills, and upgrades for the aquatic vehicle. The one down fall to Riptide GP Renegade is the controls.

To be fair there are three control schemes in Riptide GP Renegade. Since this is the iPhone and iPad those choices are limited. Also the vehicle goes top speed unless you apply the bakes. Riptide GP Renegade really needs to be on a system with a controller. There is controller support in the options of Riptide GP Renegade. I can't play an iOS game with a controller though.

Family Friendly Gaming was provided a digital download code for Riptide GP Renegade. At the moment this review was being written it is selling for $2.99 on the iTunes app store. Pretty cheap for a game with such extensive amounts of content. The biggest downside to Riptide GP Renegade is there is no version in the physical copy format. Which is a major letdown.

I had fits with the controls in Riptide GP Renegade. If I played with the tilt controls I would turn into walls, not be able to see where I was going and more. When I tried to use the touch control commands my finger would get off the exact right spot and I would crash into walls. Expect to crash into a variety of objects in Riptide GP Renegade too. Giant rocks after launching from giant waves, and more. There are tricks that I found hard to do on this platform.

Riptide GP Renegade has online game play modes for your hydrojet racer if you have enough Internet usage to do so. The career mode starts easy and gets progressively more difficult. My suggestion is to grind through previous races to earn enough money and skill points for upgrades. Riptide GP Renegade would be so much better on the Nintendo 3DS and PS Vita in my opinion.

I enjoyed my time with Riptide GP Renegade. I did get a few headaches from the controls. I love the large areas, and massive waves. The race courses are challenging. If you put the time in, and have the right equipment you can have a real good time with Riptide GP Renegade. This hand held video game is not for everyone though. The control issues turned off some here at Family Friendly Gaming.
