Shining Force EXA

Sega has made a variety of mistakes along the way in the video game industry. From releasing the Sega Saturn early, and making third party developers really angry; to buying Atlus. Sega used to have the golden touch, and it seems like they lost it, along with any common sense. What happened with the SRPG Shining Force franchise is at the top of the list of Sega's biggest blunders.

Sega has tried to do Shining Force games differently and they have fallen flat on their faces. Shining Force EXA clearly falls under that category. Sega tried to do Shining Force in the Diablo kind of a way. Problem is Shining Force EXA is way too limited. Too often the game did not let me swap characters. Which made Shining Force EXA needlessly too difficult. Expect to die because Shining Force EXA forces you into a certain party.

Shining Force EXA has a wide array of mythical creatures in it. From skeletons to elves, animal people to centaurs. Expect to run into well known monsters. Shining Force EXA has bad language, violence, magic, lack of attire, enticement to lust, religious beliefs of a false goddess, witches and more. Expect to grind in Shining Force EXA mindlessly. It takes forever since Shining Force EXA is a slow hack and slash game.

Once you get R3 in Shining Force EXA, I suggest you use it often to go back and save. Defensive battles are required in certain stages of Shining Force EXA. Making sure you have the right character there for those defensive battles is crucial. Which is why the game suggests you do not save within a defensive battle. I hated having to go back and forth swapping characters making sure they were both leveled up and had the best armor.

The Geo Fortress in Shining Force EXA is pretty powerful. The voice acting in Shining Force EXA is decent. The talking system in Shining Force EXA is messed up. We press 'O' to start a conversation, and then 'X' to continue the conversation. Why was this made needlessly confusing? Shining Force EXA is a one player only experience. This should have had a local multiplayer option. It might have had some redeeming quality then.
