Skylanders Battlecast

Family Friendly Gaming was provided a Skylanders Battle Pack, Skylanders Booster Pack, and Skylanders Battlecast Fact Sheet for this review. So what is Skylanders Battlecast? It is a free app (also known as repeat pay to play) that connect to Topps like trading cards. There are Character Cards, Spell Cards, Gear Cards, and Relic Cards in Skylanders Battlecast.

Players can battle the computer, or one another through the Internet. I have no information on how much of a drain on the Internet it is to play Skylanders Battlecast online. I do know Skylanders Battlecast is a 751 meg download. So make sure you won't incur any massive Internet usage fines for downloading and then later playing Skylanders Battlecast. Our experience in the past with other apps that use the Internet has been very costly.

The more money you put into Skylanders Battlecast the better you will do. In other words you can buy victory in Skylanders Battlecast. Cards can only be played if you have enough crystal points. Which leaves many players to just use the normal attacks of the three characters they have in their party. Three is the limit. Which means the only reason to get different characters is if you find someone more powerful or suited to a specific area.

The camera on your mobile device is used to scan the trading cards in. Cards can also be earned within the app. There are in-app purchases in Skylanders Battlecast. Parents may want to lock that down and remove that option on their kids devices. Battle packs of Skylanders Battlecast contain twenty-two cards, and Booster Packs contain eight cards. The Battle packs will contain three character cards.

I like the look of the cards in Skylanders Battlecast. I am not into apps that contain in-app purchases though. I believe in paying for something one time, and then I never have to pay for it again. There is an element of luck within Skylanders Battlecast. I got lousy cards in some battles and barely survived. I also noticed there is an imbalance where the computer is more powerful than the player. The better cards I applied the easier it was to win. So back to buying your way to victory.

Skylanders has tried a few different apps over the years. The multi-billion dollar Skylanders franchise has done well over all historically. I have no information on how the apps have done. I play the mainline Skylanders games, and love how I can use older Skylanders in future games. That way it costs my family less money on Skylanders. Maybe Skylanders Battlecast will apply that concept going forward.
