Super Mario 64

One of our projects on the books is to replay and review games from the Wyldcard's Way era. These are games with scores on our website but no review, and no mention of which issue they came from. We had a reader request come in concerning this, so we asked for the games we had listed that they wanted us to give a higher priority to. Super Mario 64 on the Nintendo 64 was one such game.

I remember Super Mario 64 very fondly. This Nintendo 64 video game may not have been the first 3D video game. It also was not the first open world video game. Super Mario 64 blew open those two styles of games in a way none of us gamers had even considered at the time. There have been all kinds of clones to Super Mario 64 over the years. Numerous games cite Super Mario 64 as their influence.

To me Super Mario 64 is put together amazingly well. Nintendo crammed so many different stars and secrets into this home console video game. Looking back at Super Mario 64 now, the graphics and camera do not impress me. Back then the graphics and the camera were impressive. The mirror effects, and how the landscape transformed at certain points were astounding. Then there were things like Metal Mario, wall jumping, and more.

We are Family Friendly Gaming. So we will call out a couple of things in Super Mario 64. The first is the violent content. We are smashing, shooting (with fire), and destroying a variety of creature in a diverse ways. The butt stomp is one of my personal favorites. Mario can get hurt in a plethora of ways in Super Mario 64 too. Mario has all kinds of cool and new skills in Super Mario 64. There are also ghosts in Super Mario 64.

You know what I love about retro games like Super Mario 64? There is no patching my cartridge. Take the long falls that will cause damage in Super Mario 64. If you butt stomp before you hit the ground you will take no damage. That is something I am sure Nintendo would want to patch. They can't do it because we have a physical copy of the original cartridge. So we can exploit things like that, and see the glitched areas.

I enjoy the music in Super Mario 64. The length of this game is very deep. Especially if you go for one hundred and twenty stars. There are secrets like Yoshi in Super Mario 64. I had a blast playing Super Mario 64 again. Flying is so much fun in Super Mario 64 too. I checked and at the time this review was written an used copy of Super Mario 64 can be purchased for just over thirty dollars. If you have not played it before I recommend checking it out. There is something special about playing this game with the Nintendo 64 controller.
