Chess Ultra
SCORE: 75
My spirit is grateful Ripstone sent Family Friendly Gaming a digital
download code for Chess Ultra on the Playstation 4. This downloadable
only chess based video game includes a Virtual Reality mode for the
Playtation 4 VR. I was so excited to play Chess Ultra in VR. I will get
into that later in this review. I researched and did not find a physical
copy version of Chess Ultra (at the time of the review). I hope it gets
one like Pure Chess did.
Chess Ultra is beautiful looking and sounding. There is relaxing music
that plays in Chess Ultra. There are a variety of backgrounds and areas
to play Chess Ultra in. There are also all kinds of different ways we
can see the pieces in Chess Ultra. The graphics took a hit when I put
them in VR though. The cool surroundings look neat in VR, but the pieces
lost some texture.
I ran into glitches while playing Chess Ultra in VR as well. If you look
away from the board at any point it will be far off to your left or
right. The options button on the controller will not recenter in the
game. I left the game and fixed it on the PS4 menu. I went back into the
game and it was messed up again. This happened multiple times to
multiple people here at Family Friendly Gaming. Shutting down the game,
and rebooting the system did not fix this glitch.
Chess Ultra is a 2.4 gig download. Families can play Chess Ultra offline
and online. Multiple family members can share a controller in Chess
Ultra. There are multiple difficulty levels of the AI in Chess Ultra.
The easier ones can be beaten by lower skilled players. The harder ones
will take a master to defeat. Families can also put a timer on in Chess
Ultra.
If you play Chess Ultra on the PS4, Xbox One or PC then you will get a
really solid chess game. If you play Chess Ultra in the VR then you will
be less thrilled. It is a shame that the VR had so many issues. I was
excited to play Chess Ultra in VR. It was difficult for me to review
Chess Ultra since the mainline game is so amazing. I had to put all of
it together for one opinion. The Grim Reaper is also in the VR mode and
will suck out your soul if he beats you. That was creepy. Why didn't the
ESRB find any descriptors for that horror content?
