Woodlawn
SCORE: 80
One of the Black Friday 2016 purchases we made was Woodlawn on DVD. I
was very interested in seeing this faith based movie. From what I saw on
the cover of the DVD it looked like a player for the University of
Washington. It looked that way to me at least. Well after watching
Woodlawn on a movie night I found out the 'W' was for Woodlawn High
School.
Woodlawn High School is in Birmingham Alabama. This movie is set in the
early 1970s when there was all kinds of racial tension, anger, hatred,
and crime. There was also segregation going on in Woodlawn. Blacks hurt
whites, whites hurt blacks, and there was all kinds of distrust. These
black students were bussed over to Woodlawn High School. The football
team was struggling with anger, hatred, and fights.
The actors and actresses that headline Woodlawn are Sean Astin, Nic
Bishop, Caleb Castille, Sherri Shepherd, and Jon Voight. One of my
favorite characters in Woodlawn is Bear Bryant. He is a very memorable
character in this movie. Hank Erwin is another memorable character in
Woodlawn. Hank finds the solution to the racial tensions in Birmingham,
Alabama.
What solves decades of hatred in Woodlawn? Turning our lives over to
Jesus Christ. Hank gets the super majority of the Woodlawn football team
to turn their lives over to God. They start a fire that spreads. The
racial divide was crossed. People began caring about one another. They
did not identify one another based on the color of their skin. Instead
they focused on what the person could do.
Woodlawn got me thinking. With all of the political discourse in America
right now, what we need is protestors and angry voters to turn to Jesus.
They need to find the one way Jesus Christ. Woodlawn also teaches us to
embrace our talents. Woodlawn contains some mild violence, anger and
hatred. It shows how bad things were at one point in time. They are not
much better in some areas of America right now. If we all want peace we
need to turn to Jesus.
I am pleased that Woodlawn is not very preachy either. This movie has
powerful moments that have made me think. Without Jesus one group will
always mistreat another group. The pendulum has swung where men,
Christians, and white people are being discriminated against now. Love
is what breaks the hate. Love is what sets us free. Truth is where we
need to go.
