Pop-Up Pilgrims

I am thankful Family Friendly Gaming was given a digital download code for Pop-Up Pilgrims on the PS4 VR. This is a 2D side scrolling video game that reminds me of Lemmings. We have villagers that must be guided to the end spot. How do we guide them? A floating false god does the work. Guess what role the player takes on in Pop-Up Pilgrims? The floating false god.

Pop-Up Pilgrims looks nice in Virtual Reality. The game does have indie graphics. It is interesting to see the wrap around effect in Pop-Up Pilgrims though. I ran into some issues with the controls in Pop-Up Pilgrims. There are multiple 2D planes in this game. Swapping from one to another was frustrating at times. I never could adapt to that very well. I would get stuck on one flat 2D plane and struggle to swap to another one. The tutorial was the worst.

The Eastern flavor music in Pop-Up Pilgrims is neat to listen to. If you do not like that style of music then you will disagree with my high score. I found Pop-Up Pilgrims to be simple and easy. It is like a lot of the PS4 VR video games in that regard. In a lot of ways Pop-Up Pilgrims felt very shallow to me. Waiting for the villagers to move back around because I did not jump them in time was so boring.

If you let a villager die then their spirit will rise from the death spot up the screen. We can make the villagers jump short distances and long distances based on how we line up the puffs of clouds. I love being able to use a normal PS4 controller with Pop-Up Pilgrims. I wish more VR games included that game play mechanic. I understand the games that need us to have two hands. It is just nice to use a controller at times.

Pop-Up Pilgrims is a downloadable only video game. I found no information on a physical copy version of Pop-Up Pilgrims on the PS4 VR. Pop-Up Pilgrims starts really easy and gets a bit more difficult later on. I know plenty of people who will be immediately offended by the false god content within Pop-Up Pilgrims. I wish the developer had been more sensitive to the beliefs here in America.
