Ready Player One

Noah and I really enjoyed Ready Player One on DVD. Peter was not so impressed with this movie. But then Peter is not impressed with much these days. He is in that later teenage phase. It takes 140 minutes to watch this PG-13 rated movie. If you are watching our Haul videos you knew this review was coming. If not, please check out the FFG Haul videos here.

Ready Player One is video game related big time. Not only that, Ready Player One is also constantly paying its respects to the 1980s. I became a teenager in the 1980s and really enjoyed that decade. It was the best decade since the 1950s, and way better than the 1990s. It is great to see all of these references in Ready Player One. This movie is set in 2045.

Virtual reality is mixed with a massively online world (called the Oasis) where all kinds of things can be done. In fact Ready Player One has multiple different worlds where gamers can enjoy themselves. I remember a Minecraft world, a Doom world, space station, racing and more. The creator of the Oasis James Halliday sent off a major Easter Egg in his game when he died.

What was this Easter Egg? Whomever could solve his riddles, and beat his challenges would get three keys. The first person to get three keys would get controlling stock in his company, and decide the future direction of the game. We learn about James Halliday and his regrets in Ready Player One. This movie teaches us that gaming is better together, and the real world is better than virtual reality.

There are issues in Ready Player One for families to be aware of. They are violence, blood, lack of attire, enticement to lust, bad language, and more. The one thing in Ready Player One that does not fit is the bad language. It feels off in this movie. It reminds me of a professor who taught spewing bad language was the hardest addiction to break. Ready Player One could have been so much better with cleaner mouths.
