Sully

I hope you are aware of the FFG Haul videos by now. If not, please click here. Sully on DVD was featured in one of those FFG Haul videos. I was personally very curious to see this movie based on the real story of the miracle landing on the Hudson river. Sully focuses more on the aftermath than the crash.

Sully comes across as a bit of a witch hunt against the pilot. There were multiple nearby airports. Why didn't he try to land at one of them? Why choose a forced water landing in the Hudson river? The answers to these questions become apparent in Sully. At least the movie moves us to those conclusions. I was not there and I do not have the aviation knowledge to judge the pilot and his decisions.

The issues families can have with Sully are bad language, and plane crash images. I actually had trouble sleeping after watching Sully on DVD. I kept seeing those crashes over and over again. I did not expect Sully would impact me so deeply, but it did. I just want to warn you about that in case you have a similar reaction to watching this movie. The good news is no one died in Sully.

The low altitude bird strike that took out both engines was what caused the plane to come down. The computer simulations did not take some factors into account in my opinion. First was the other planes in the air. Second was the time it took the tower to allow them the ability to get right back to that airport. That is if they could have turned around quick enough. Remember they had no engine power and were in essence gliding down to Earth.

I enjoyed Sully tremendously on a personal level. It really showed how this incident turned the lives of so many people upside down. It also showed how the government wanted to learn from the incident and prepare for it next time. I found it interesting that the simulations took seventeen attempts to get right. When reaction time was taken into account they could not land it anymore.
