Anthill

On the same day the embargo lifted Family Friendly Gaming was given a digital download code to Anthill on the Nintendo Switch. Anthill comes to us from Image & Form. Does that developer name sound familiar? It should since they make the SteamWorld video games. At this time I am not aware of a physical copy version of Anthill in the United States.

Families can only play Anthill in the hand-held mode. Why is that? Anthill requires touch controls. We tap the screen in menus, draw lines, and tap in the game play levels. Do not even try to play Anthill docked to the television. I did and was welcomed with a bit of a shock. Anthill is a very small download in terms of memory size as well. Anthill is a tower defense game unlike anything I have played before.

We have four different kinds of ants in Anthill. We have Workers, Soldiers, Spitters, and Bombers. All of them come out of the ant hill and perform their functions. We draw a line from the ant hill to food. Then we select the workers. They collect the food which allows us the ability to make more ants. We must also protect our works with soldiers. So draw a line right along the workers line and select soldiers.

Bombers are used by tapping where you want them to bomb. Each of the ants can be upgraded after levels are played. You decide which ants to upgrade and when. The territories in Anthill are Happy Campers, Deep Forest, New Colony, The Expanse, Temple of Bloom, Antology, and Infinite. The top down graphics suit this game, and music is fun to listen to. We face waves of enemy bugs in Anthill.

The one issue I can see families having with Anthill is the blood, and gore. Bugs explode and leave their residue on the ground. Workers can then be sent to collect the blood and guts as food for the colony. This is very realistic with nature with one exception. There are a lot of bugs that attack in Anthill. With limited time it can be difficult to clean up all the different blood and gore areas. I also believe Anthill should have been given the Everyone TEN and OLDER ONLY rating by the ESRB. Another failure of the ESRB to add to an already extremely long list.
