Awesome Golf

Hopefully you caught the Twitch live stream I did where I played Awesome Golf on the Evercade system. This Atari Lynx video game is a hand held video game from a retro system that ported to the Evercade. I have a long history with golf video games. Sadly my long history with golf video games has not been that positive. I will admit I do not know much about golf beyond playing this game in video games. Playing Awesome Golf proved that.

Why do I say these things? I don't know which club to use in each situation and that is apparent from the game play video of Awesome Golf. This game does not help the player with any kind of assistance. Meaning Awesome Golf will not tell you what club to use in the different situations. Awesome Golf also will not point toward the hole at times. I missed some putts in Awesome Golf because the guide was not pointed toward the hole.

The biggest issue I had with Awesome Golf is the controls. I am not capable of guessing how far the hole is compared to the power gauge. Even spamming the button when the ball was really close would go past the hole at times. Awesome Golf led to more frustration for me than anything else. If I had the time to get a PhD in Awesome Golf then I could probably play it a lot better. I just don't feel like struggling trying to learn a game that has some bad design.

Awesome Golf looks good for an Atari Lynx video game. I love seeing the ball fly up in the air and then come back down to the ground. I had issues with Awesome Golf in terms of moving my pointer on the map screen. There are three courses in Awesome Golf with eighteen holes each. The content is a bit on the short side. The game wants players to play all eighteen holes which does not make it very hand held friendly.

For its era Awesome Golf is decent. There are obvious issues with this hand held video game. There are also some neat aspects. I enjoyed the quiet music, and special effect sounds. The graphics are solid and the game emulates golf quite well. I am sure I would do just as badly on a real golf course. Awesome Golf felt more cerebral than arcade which is something that also fits golf.
