Goldeneye

I ran across The Pierce Brosnan 007 Collection during the Black Friday sales in November of 2020. Goldeneye is the first movie in this collection and I decided to watch it first as I worked through the movies and write reviews for each of them. I saw Goldeneye a long time ago and barely remembered it. I did remember a few key spoilers as they were coming up in the movie. So I was able to predict it quite well.

Goldeneye changes the James Bond franchise in quite a few key ways. This is the first time Pierce Brosnan plays the role of James Bond. A woman was brought it to play the role of M in Goldeneye as well. Goldeneye has a real anti-male undertone. James Bond is attacked for being a womanizer and a flirt. There is even a female character in Goldeneye who tries to kill James Bond physically during what started as a romantic scene.

It takes one hundred and thirty minutes to watch Goldeneye from start to finish. There are attempts at humor that just fell completely flat for me. The issues families can have with Goldeneye are nudity, lack of attire, enticement to lust, violence, blood, bad language, sex outside of marriage and more. The gadgets in Goldeneye take a real back seat and honestly are not very impressive.

SPOILER ALERT! The story revolves around the presumed death of 006. He is actually alive and becomes the villain in Goldeneye. He does this because of what happened historically with the British betraying the Cossacks. The problem for MI6 is 006 was an orphaned Cossack. He has no interest in serving for duty and country, especially to a country that betrayed his people and caused the death of his parents.

Two satellites in orbit are used as weapons in Goldeneye. These satellites drop down an EMP ray that destroys all electronics that are not shielded. This could be a devastating weapon. Ultimately the weapons are being used to hide thefts. At one point James Bond points out this fact. The grand villain is actually just a common criminal stealing from others.

There are some interesting action moments within Goldeneye. I found the motorcycle jumping off the cliff to get into an airplane a bit unbelievable personally. I also questioned why certain things were done in the beginning of this movie. For example 006 and 007 are all stealthy infiltrating this base and planting bombs. Then they decide to set off alarms so the soldiers all come to them. Why? What is the escape plan in that scenario?
