Kowloon High-School Chronicle

Arc System Works publishes some very interesting video games. Kowloon High-School Chronicle is a classic example. This hybrid video game mixes styles in a way I cannot remember playing before. Kowloon High-School Chronicle is part dungeon crawler, part visual novel, and part role playing video game. We play a treasure hunter in this first person perspective dungeon crawler. Kowloon High-School Chronicle was first released in 2004 and not in the US. Now US gamers can play this game remastered in HD.

The graphics in Kowloon High-School Chronicle are a notch or two above meh. There are some neat aspects like the bosses, and human characters. I had some issues trying to figure out what my eight choices were in responding to human characters during long conversations. The music in Kowloon High-School Chronicle is fantastic. I love listening to it. The voices are all in Japanese. I did not find an option for English voice acting.

Kowloon High-School Chronicle starts with some quote. I was quite pleased to get a Bible verse when I started the game. Not sure if that was lucky or intentional. Many of the backgrounds to areas we talk to people are done in blurred photographs. They look interesting albeit out of focus. We can carry some cool weapons in Kowloon High-School Chronicle. I love being able to have a machine gun, gas grenades and a knife. I felt like Rambo.

My biggest gripe with Kowloon High-School Chronicle is the saving. We can save in our room, at Soul Wells, and when we are in first person mode not in dungeons. When we must go through lengthy conversations (ala the visual novel concept), I wanted to stop and save. Kowloon High-School Chronicle would not let me. So I lost all my progress or blitzed through the talking to get to a point where I could save.

The issues families can have with Kowloon High-School Chronicle are violence, enticement to lust, ghosts, false gods, and more. We explore a plethora of ancient cultures and learn about them in Kowloon High-School Chronicle. I had some issues targeting with the machine gun in Kowloon High-School Chronicle. At times the gun would not target things like scorpions or the foot of the giant dog boss.

Kowloon High-School Chronicle is a strange mixing of different styles. I really like the first person dungeon crawling with the jumping and solving puzzles. I did not mind the fighting sections of Kowloon High-School Chronicle. The visual novel concepts of building friendships is not my personal cup of tea. I can see why some people in the past thought Kowloon High-School Chronicle would not do well in America. I believe Kowloon High-School Chronicle is unique enough that gamers will want to give it a look see.
