The Phantom
SCORE: 70
Back in 1996 there was a super hero movie
that wanted to revive a comic book franchise (like what happened with
Batman in 1990). This one was The Phantom. I vaguely remembered this
movie from back in the day. Helping my kids have a well rounded super
hero education is the main reason I picked it for one of our movie
nights. The Phantom is a decent super hero movie from that era. We go
back to 1938 where a super hero could ride a horse.
The issues families can have with The Phantom are bad language, lack of
attire, enticement to lust, violence, and more. The Phantom revolves
around three skulls that grant the user power to destroy. Put these
three skulls together and you get a laser in essence. SPOILER ALERT!
There is a fourth skull that can control the first three. That comes
into play in the ending of The Phantom.
The purple outfit in The Phantom looks pretty good. I am still a bit
vague on powers and skills. Evil people think The Phantom cannot be
killed since many of them have killed him over the years. Actually the
mantra of The Phantom is passed down from father to son. The son even
sees his dead father in the movie multiple times. How communing with the
dead happens in The Phantom is not actually explained.
Not only does The Phantom have a horse he also has a pet wolf that helps
him attack the enemies. The bad guys think they have The Phantom
contained and his trusty wolf comes to his aid. There is a love interest
for The Phantom in this movie as well. That is left open for a sequel.
Sadly The Phantom must not have done very well because it was not picked
up for a second movie to my knowledge.
I was pleasantly surprised by The Phantom in terms of offensive/bad
content. There is some violence, and bad language. The levels or degrees
of them are way lower than I was expecting. The violence is a bit on the
campy side like the 1960s Batman television show. Minus the giant words
on the screen of course. The most interesting thing in The Phantom is a
certain well known actress when she was younger.
