Dark Deity

I appreciate that Family Friendly Gaming was given a digital download code for Dark Deity on the Nintendo Switch. This is a turn based strategy role playing video game. Those are also known as SRPGs. We have a cast of up to thirty characters to battle with in Dark Deity. We must plan who gets the killing blow because that character will get more experience. It is easy in Dark Deity to get some really powerful characters and some weak ones on the team. This concept was also used heavily in the Shining Force franchise.

Graphically Dark Deity reminds me some GBA games. Dark Deity is definitely done in the retro style. The same can be said for the music. As you can expect the memory size of Dark Deity is just over eight hundred megs. It should not completely fill your PC or Nintendo Switch. There are some sound bytes from the character when there are conversations. I have seen this in other games as well.

The issues families will have with Dark Deity are bad language, lack of attire, enticement to lust, violence, magic, false gods, alcohol, and more. The ESRB found a couple of those in their descriptors. Yet again the ESRB continues to miss things and fail families. I am unclear why there is all the religious content related to these false gods in Dark Deity. Especially when they are trying to sell Dark Deity in a country where the super majority self-identify as Christian. Seems like a poor targeting strategy to me.

The battles in Dark Deity can be long. There is no saving within a battle either. The first couple of chapters only lets players save at the start of a chapter. Then we can save and setup before a battle starts. There are different character bonds that can be worked on. Honestly the whole character bonding did not interest me. I know other SRPGs have used it as well. Expect a story about a world plagued by war. I know not very original.

I enjoyed the battles within Dark Deity. The three difficulty levels help entry SRPG gamers learn the system and figure out how to keep their characters alive. If you are having issues with that then heal when characters take hits. Characters really low on health can move away from the enemies until they can be healed. Dark Deity is no Shining Force. It does try to be more like the Fire Emblem franchise.

All in all there are some cool and good things about Dark Deity for fans of SRPG. If you like the nostalgia of the retro graphics and music then you might get into Dark Deity. The downside is all of the religious content that tries to indoctrinate gamers into that belief set. On top of that Dark Deity has other areas for improvement that the ESRB was not competent enough to discover. Would it kill the ESRB to play these games instead of running propaganda campaigns about how great they are?
