Family Camp
SCORE: 75
I am very thankful Family Friendly Gaming
was given a retail version of Family Camp on DVD. This comedy has all
kinds of interesting threads and lessons. Family Camp stars Leigh-Allyn
Baker, Tommy Woodard, Codie James, and Gigi Orsillo. Tommy Ackerman is
working himself to the bone to get that promotion so he won't have to
worry about money as much going forward. Grace Ackerman is his wife and
she wants him to be present with their family more often. Tommy comes
into church late and has to go to church camp with his family to make it
up to his wife Grace. The Ackerman couple have two children (Hannah and
Henry) that are pretty much doing their own thing. Expect spoiler alerts
in this review.
Eddie Sanders and his wife Victoria have it all together and have two
wonderful children. They pray together, work together, have the Biblical
structure and more. The Sanders have won the trophy at the church camp
multiple years in a row. As the couples compete the Sanders family
dominate but the Ackerman family is gaining on them. The issues the
couples have is exposed in Family Camp as they must share a yurt. The
couples also learn from one another as they have different life styles.
The two dads wind up lost in the woods in some dangerous situations.
There is plenty of humor within Family Camp especially when the two
fathers are stuck together. Eddie Sanders is positive, upbeat and always
trying to help. Tommy Ackerman needs some help. So does Eddie Sanders. I
noticed Eddie Sanders was not very humble, and very competitive. Tommy
Ackerman is pretty aloof, and focused on work. Eddie Sanders takes
charge and does not let his wife do important things for him. She feels
that means he does not love her, and he is not listening to her.
Family Camp ends with some threads left open. For example a co-worker of
Tommy Ackerman pretends to be him to steal a client and the promotion.
Whatever happened with that? Does Tommy just give up on his dreams?
Family Camp ends with the women getting what they want, and the men
having to change. The women are not required or expected to change
anything about themselves. This lesson is what bothers me about too many
faith related films in recent years. In reality there should be
compromise. I have lost track of how many fellow believers I have talked
to that wanted something in their spouse to change. They prayed and
prayed until the Holy Spirit revealed to them that they needed to
change. When they changed that also wound up changing their spouse.
It takes 111 minutes to watch Family Camp from start to finish. I was
very disappointed with Pastor Dave in Family Camp. He makes sure
everyone knows he is not judging when he is making points. Which is a
very Holly Weird thing, and not much of a church thing. The Bigfoot
hunters were an interesting spin on Family Camp. There is also a plot
twist about being lost in the woods that I will not spoil. Lying was not
really needed there. I can think of multiple better answers to the map
and compass question.
Family Camp is much safer than a lot of the movies on the market today.
I find it interesting that the worldly couple became more Christian, and
the strong Christian couple improved their marriage as well. Family Camp
reminds me to not seek the approvement of man. We should all be seeking
the approval of God. We should also be listening to God. That is another
lesson from Family Camp.
